“Butler ii” -- Dude, I don’t have a desk or a couch where I live presently and writing all of these things on the floor with my head propped up against the bed (I do have a bedframe, lol) is really insane. Anyway, this one is called “Butler ii” because the homie Patrick Sexton was visiting Minneapolis to check out MCAD and we’d gone to see mssr. Jimmy and the T-Wolves the previous evening. You can see the recycling here in the “Big Window” text at the top, where once it’d read “Yasuaki Shimizu.” It looks like the :3 face is also where the sideways 8 infinity was in the “Auoog” Eagles flyer with the list. I think this is my first time using Comic Sans in a flyer … which, I guess, probably registers as a “wacky” thing to do when I click on it on some level … but I really just think it’s a beautifully non-serifed typeface that creates organic movement and form while still being legible and containing a rich sense history (owed to its frequent usage.) Like using preset synth tones, a recognizable font can become psychedelic via the cultural baggage / connotations it carries. The date square, here “DEC. FOU,” is making its fourth straight appearance. I remember realizing I could just include a few letters of “Fourth” to keep it more symmetrical / balanced feeling like a liberating thing. The “Ps” at the top is about as close to a band name as you’ll get on this one (representing Patrick Sexton, who would be performing as So Bad.) “RMO” was a shout-out to my longtime favorite HARMONY shirt (a local set-building company my Dad had worked with a bunch in the 90s) … which, when worn under an opened collared shirt, usually only revealed the letters RMO. RMO also appears on the Renaissance 2 artwork for this same reason … and I’d extrapolated in my head that it stood for “Regular Magic Orchestra.” Three people attended this show - Jordan Bleau; Jacque Clark, and Ryan Norton - as there was an insane snow/rain blizzard that night. It froze the van doors shut and Patrick and I actually couldn’t even load out afterwards cos we couldn’t get the doors open and had to go back the next day to get the gear. We both reasoned if he could fuck with that energy with good nature, he could totally cut it in town. He handled it beautifully, of course, and ended up moving here to attend MCAD for grad school. I remember this being the first show I brought my own cord lamp to Eagles and threaded it through the drop ceiling panels above the stage. It was also the first show I played the keyboard part for what became “Wawaa Mix” or whatever that song is called on NPJ. I remember that feeling pretty good. Early on in exploring how to make Ableton feel more like an instrument I was playing in real-time rather than a playback device I was editing.
