"Blank (Non) Relly Could" -- This is the first digital flyer I made myself, after watching my Dad lay a few things out in Pages (an app I didn’t even know existed prior to this.) Initially, this flyer had a photograph in the center of it … but, at some point in the design experimenting (or maybe in wondering how it would look printed?), it occurred to me that the poster would have much more of an idiosyncratic potency to it if there wasn’t some kind of image/illustration on it. Around the same time that I was designing this, I had inherited a book from my Dad called “Business Card Graphics” from Pie Books … which absolutely blew my mind. Most of the business cards featured in the first edition are Japanese … and the use of space in the designs … the way the little rectangles became whole worlds / rooms / gardens with thoughtfully (maybe, even, “intimately”) placed objects / items / furnishings was like a revolution of sorts to view. If I’m remembering right, when I removed the picture from this flyer, the connection to the business cards was illuminated and a working precept, going forward, began to come into view.
