“Ferrari (b)” — It would be tempting to consider this one the first official jettisoning of date/place/time/price (ie. “necessary info”) … but, conversely, it is actually all in the flyer … you just have to solve the puzzle to find it. Homie Travis from Naomi Punk had emailed me asking if I felt into booking a secret / more low-key / essentially more punk second show for the band while they were on a formal club tour. I loved the idea and was super happy to provide. (They were touring their third record, Yellow, which still remains a truly punk, expectation-subverting curveball & deep audio document.) Of course, the difficult thing would be that the show couldn’t be loudly advertised. No prob, lol. Keeping with the previous flyer, Holger Czukay’s name is prominently featured … as he’d recently passed and, upon discovering new mind-blowing pockets of his discography in memoriam (namely “The New Millenium” with U-She … which still sounds decades ahead of its time), he was hugely on my mind. I was going to provide the crossword answers in these notes but … looking at it now, I can’t even remember most of them, lol. I do remember having to generate a few different puzzles with the website as the first few looked unfortunately like symbols of hatred. Let me see if I can get any of the answers. ACROSS: 3. I’m thinking it’s “Digital” (per the DD-3 Digital Delay pedal and the L at the end from “Yellow” down.) // 6. “Scorpion” (from “Scorpion Glue, all over my body;” a line on the disc NP was touring [same goes for “Tiger Pipe,” which appears above., and was, hopefully, the conciliatory give-away, lol.) // 8. (No idea, lol, but I’m guessing it’s a reference to Yohji Yamamoto whose work with YMO was a big influence for me at the time.) // 10. (This could be “Free Music,” lol, because of an affinity I shared with Jordan Bleau for a tile-art “Semente” that appeared in the entryway of the Robert’s Shoes building / Licorice Beach.) // 11. (This could also be “Free Music.”) // 12. “Na” lol // 13. “Naomi Punk” // 16. (No idea, lol.) // 17. Pretty sure this is “ROM,” as in computer (ie. Neuromantic) memory. // 18. “IE,” who was playing the show. //// //// DOWN: 1. Based on the other letters, this could be “Painting” but I have no idea why I would’ve included that word, lol. // 2. Guessing this is the Captured Tracks catalog number for “Yellow.” // 4. 87.9 The Ric was Richmond’s low-power transmitter radio station that he ran when the space where the show was going to be held was still known as “Coming Soon.” // 5. (No idea) // 7. “Dead Media,” name of the current operation in said venue space; a record store run, in part, by Walker. // 9. (No idea) // 13. Maybe just “New”? // 14. I would guess this is “Ob Chod,” the fourth band on the bill, whose name is taken from a Czech experimental film we were shown at Perpich Arts High School. // 15. K-R-I? Lol, I have no idea. //////// Anyway, if I remember right, I recall someone in Naomi Punk laughing and saying, “Hey man, this was pretty much impossible,” when I handed them cardstock versions in person.
